What's It All About for Clay and for the Fans

"Some people, who wish to only concentrate on hypocrisy, should be reminded that this is what it's all about." Polly Graf

Caregiving: Clay Aiken is about inclusionBy ALEX CUKANUPI Correspondent

When most celebrities talk about being a role model, they mean not getting arrested or driving drunk, but when Clay Aiken talks about being a role model, he demonstrates how to treat people with physical and intellectual challenges.

Aiken started a foundation, raised a lot of money for charity and became a UNICEF ambassador for education, but he also serves as unofficial caregiver spokesman and role model.

Inclusion is what Aiken is all about. Shortly after he placed second on Fox-TV's American Idol in 2003 and began his professional singing career, Aiken founded the Bubel/Aiken Foundation, which supports opportunities for children with developmental disabilities to have a full range of childhood experiences their peers enjoy.

Camp Gonzo, a summer camp program that brings the YMCA experience to children with disabilities, is one such program. Aiken, who worked with autistic children as a college student, thinks children with disabilities grow and develop better when they do things with other children because they model their behavior after the other children. In addition, he thinks it's unfair that not all children can participate in sports, parties, camp and other activities including service.

The foundation makes Able to Serve grants of up to $2,000 each to youth with disabilities for community service projects for National Youth Service Day.

"Conventional wisdom often looks upon youth with disabilities as a population to be served BY volunteers, instead of as a group that can serve AS volunteers," said Aiken last April, before he went off with children with intellectual disabilities to plant trees in a Hollywood, Fla., neighborhood. "We seek to change this misperception by engaging youth with disabilities to serve, create and lead others in service projects on National Youth Service Day and every day of the year."

For all I know, Mick Jagger's fans have been holding bake sales for charity for the last 50 years, but not only does Aiken raise a lot of money for charity, and donate to charity, so do his fans.

One Web site, the Clayboard, recently raised more than $10,000 for their Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF fundraiser, and in November they raised $10,427 for the Bubel/Aiken Foundation in honor of Aiken's birthday Nov. 30.

They raise money collecting spare change at concerts and they hold fundraisers and provide "acts of kindness" -- the members of the Mishawaka, Ind., Clay Aiken Meetup Group sent a small gift to each child in every hospital in Raleigh, N.C., Aiken's hometown, on his birthday.

In between recording and several U.S. tours, Aiken was the keynote speaker at the Fort Lauderdale Fearless Caregiver Conference in 2005 sponsored by the Caregiver Media Group, which emphasizes caring for the caregivers, and he has also been featured twice on the cover of Today's Caregiver magazine.

Aiken "gets" caregiving in a way that few do -- that it's all about caring -- and that those who need caregiving are often stigmatized and ostracized.

Among his fans, mostly women ages 2 to 92 with a growing male following, a lot are caregivers. A lot live though more challenges in a day than some people do in a year.
Many fans have formed their own community on the Internet where they share information on Aiken's tours and albums and non-Aiken related stories. Some have made a hobby of counting Aiken's eyelashes, but there have also been numerous stories of how Aiken's example has changed their own behavior.

One woman told how she had ignored a small child in her apartment complex who was clearly going through a hard time until she asked herself, "How would Clay treat that child?" He would befriend the child, she thought, and as a result she befriended him and his family, and marveled how little we know about our neighbors.

A man admitted that people with disabilities had made him uncomfortable, but while at a dinner that included some who were blind, he decided to "act like Clay" and he became his table's host, introducing people, including them all in the conversation, and as a result it became one of the best nights of his life.

There are a lot of stories like that -- too numerous to mention here, but, once all the records sales, tour dates and donations are tallied, Aiken's example to remove the stigma of disabilities may be his most notable accomplishment as an entertainer.

Though the record industry and media have been extremely supportive in their relationships with Aiken and his ideals thus far, such sentiments have especially rubbed off on "Claymates," the fans who continuously congregate by his side. Not only have they swooped up CDs, concert tickets and the book, they always remind their hero to stand firm in his faith."They are, without doubt or question, the most passionate and dedicated fans I have ever heard of," he concedes. "I could not have been blessed with a more supportive group of fans. They not only support me, but also support the causes that are important to me. That, perhaps, has been the biggest blessing."

"We have someone here today, from the smash hit show American Idol, we're thrilled to have him joining us today, because when it was made known that he would appear on this Telethon, the emails and the fan clubs that this young man has have sent us $30,000.00 just at the fact that he was here.
And I can honestly say I have never, in all of my life, seen a theatrical groundswell that this kid has motivated, that it makes us all come right back to the bobby sox and Frank. And isn't it nice to live through that magnificence again? Here is Clay Aiken"

Polly Graf's blog is on the front page. She found two short but great articles which show what Clay and his fans are all about.

She contributes to this blog.

I was just on PH and some were bringing up JP. I told them I thought they were trying to stir up trouble. They said John was doing the stirring again. Is this true? I thought it was Groucho. Oh, well, I thought that might happen. I understand if you don't want to discuss this in this blog.

Great blog, BTW. Bless Clay's heart. He makes me smile and cry too.

Oh Crap said...

I haven't heard of JP trying to stir up anything

He's BACCCCCCCCCKKKKKK!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Yes, OC, people think John is behind the Cootie blog.

Anonymous said...

Well, if you haven't heard anything, I will take that as good news.

Anonymous said...

I am a fan of Clay and I support him 100% and that's,that.
It's nice to find a place that puts the truth out there. Thanks

Anonymous said...

What makes the OC board think JP is behind that blog? Do they know something we don't?

Why would someone take a trip to paradise, Hawaii and then spend all his time posting under several names on his hate blog? I think he's still back in the swamp smoking the moss and taking a fantasy trip. Wonder if he gets frequent flyer miles for those imaginary trips.

Groucho's new orleans website is no longer.

Not surprising, Cat, since he is a corporation now .. 1 grouch and his 6 Golden Showers (did I get that right?). Somehow he's going to get rich talking to all 7 of himself.

TheTruthExposed said...

Amazing that anyone believes anything he says at all. I dealt directly with him right after the "boob" picture came out in 2004 on another board as ScarletNola. He pretty much said he was the now know "insider" with RCA and hated CA and wanted him to cease to exist. I believe this was about the time that CA at the time surpassed Kelly in sales who has done pretty well since then.

Also, CA was Toys for Tots spokesman for the Marines in 2004.

Just to add to the very lengthy list of charities for OMC.

I just stumbled across the blog and am wondering what is the purpose of this blog since Clay hasn't deemed to say anything himself? Just to act as another fan site and recount his accomplishments?

Oh Crap said...

Anon at 9:41, Clay doesn't have to say anything. He has nothing to answer to if that's what you're getting at. He owes liars and gnats not one iota of his time.

Anonymous said...

Anon at 9:41 - and what's wrong with this being a blog being another Clay fansite to talk about his accomplishments? Works for me - it's a lot more pleasant than reading some other crap that's been in other blogs.

And as Oh Crap said, Clay hasn't answered, he has no need to. It would be a waste of time to talk back to crazy people. He has better things to do with his time.

If you want to find John Paulus, he recently posted on tinfoilhat's blog to say hello. I don't think they'll be hearing from JP too often. TFH started her blog when JP closed his down. It has the same hate-filled posters that were at John's site. Those are some nasty people over there.

I DON'T think JP has anything to do with Groucho's blog.

Anonymous said...

I wonder if the Cootie actually got slapped with a cease and desist..

Anonymous said...

Shady, what is your blog?

It's really easy to "make up" stories and claim you are an insider. For example, I could claim I have a contact in New Orleans who just happened to look up Groucho. What they found was the Mrs. Groucho rules her little baldy husband with an iron hand. There is no mistress, or baby either. Groucho was making a pest of himself after a lovely young, married woman. She and her husband are expecting their first child. Groucho made his fantasies known that he thought he was the father and was having an imaginary affair with the lady. Her husband told Mrs. Groucho, since she wears the pants in the family. She grounded the little jerk, and slapped him silly. That's why the "baby" stories have ended.

See how easy it is?

Oh Crap said...

Shady's blog is placetotalk and we have a link to it at the bottom of the front page.

Its true, anyone can make up stories about other people. The question is, why would you want to? And the bigger question is, what kind of people believe this crap? How can it be lawful to spread hate about someone? I do believe these people will be exposed for the hate-mongering, isane and low-life scum they are.

So who in the playlist of freaks and baddies is tinfoilhat? That site is completely childish and filled with Clay photoshops the likes of which we have not seen since the Clay Pippi Longstockings and the infamous Clay bullseye.

Perhaps if all you intend to do with this blog is recite platitudes about Clay, you might consider renaming it: Clay's Regurgitators, for it has become as boring, tedious and censored as the Clayboard.

Oh Crap said...

I'm allowing your comment, Anon at 9:00, simply because you're an asshole and should be told so by everyone else that reads your comment.

Anonymous said...

Shady, My post at 7:51 a.m. was not about your blog. I wanted to read yours but haven't been able to. My post was to comment on ANON. post at 7:06. I thought she was speaking about Groucho. I reread her post and I still think she is talking about how he makes up stories. I could be wrong, though.

This blog is making somebody mad. Oh, I'm really worried about that. How dare we say something nice about Clay. The nerve of us. HA!

Well, good! May we look forward to not having you grace our pages in the future?

In the meantime, we're adjusting: getting past the old; getting used to the few; and gearing up for the new! Wanna help?

Anon at 9:41

Since we're all mindless followers when Clay says "Use Your Voice" we listen and use our voices. Tough that you don't like what you read. Go somewhere else and read what you do like.

Anonymous said...

I posted the ANON 7:06 post about making up stories and yes, it was about Groucho. I wanted to show how easy it is to take something Groucho said and make an ugly story out of it.

Don't mean to change the subject .... I know that the FOC board closed but I thought they were going to open another one. Doesn't anyone have the web address? thanks!
